Welcome to OD Music Production 101 – Get Started Making Music at Home guide! As you’re reading this, I assume you’re itching to dip your toe into the near limitless world of music production and learn how to get all the amazing music you think of constantly out of your head and onto records that people can actually hear – and that’s exactly what we’re going to help you with.
Music is an amazing art form, and it’s one of the most important things in my life. Being able to express yourself with a piece of music is cathartic, exciting, and way more productive than racking up yet another thousand hours on the latest minor update to Street Fighter on the Xbox (you might not relate too strongly to that one – if I’m honest, that’s more of a reminder to me).
The hardest thing to do is get started, as you find yourself bombarded with software this and hardware that, each and every manufacturer and developer telling you that their product is the best. The honest truth is that all any piece of equipment is is a tool, and that tool is useless until you understand how to use it. OD Music Production 101 is all about giving you the fundamental knowledge that will guide you through those tentative first steps, and showing you how to apply it in a way that will leave you feeling confident and empowered to continue your journey, instead of unsure and ill informed.
We’ve split this guide up into sections that act like building blocks. There’s no point in simply jumping straight in to ‘how to make a dubstep wobble bass’ and telling you to arbitrarily turn dials until you get a sound that we’ve decided you should be making; by the time you finish this guide you will actually understand, from the ground up, what sound is – and have the foundational knowledge of studio equipment to allow you to start making the music you want instead of blindly clicking buttons and twisting knobs with no clue what they are or why they’re affecting the sound.
OD Music Production 101 is designed to be easy to digest and quick to learn, and I’m not going to go into earth shattering detail on anything because I’m a strong believer in keeping things moving. If you would like to get some in depth, video based tutorials to really get down to the nitty gritty of making music and an in depth understanding of exactly how to use your new found studio, you might be interesteded in OD Total Music Production, our premium 12 hour video course that goes into massive detail. We also have regular free video tutorials on Oh Drat – believe it or not, some principles of sound and music production are even easier to understand when you can actually hear them!
You’re an artist already; you just need the coaching in how to get your masterpiece from your head to the speakers. We can’t wait to help and hear your work.
